Cougars split tourney pair, finish with fourth playoff spot
Alexander opens post season on the road Friday

By D.N. PENNELL, Jr.
The Alexander Central Varsity Cougar Baseball Team came away with a two-game split in a pair of NW4A Conference Tournament games last week in Asheville and Granite Falls.

Alexander (10-12) opened tourney play with a game at A.C. Reynolds High School on Thursday evening, May 1.

Forced to travel after losing a coin flip to decide the home site, Alexander responded with a 6-2 win over the Rockets. The win secured the fourth playoff seed for the Cougars in the upcoming NCHSAA playoffs.

Adam Sigmon tossed the win on the mound for the Cougars as Alexander moved into the semi-final round.

At the plate, sophomore Logan Chapman delivered the biggest blow of the night with a grand slam home run.

The win moved Alexander into a semi-final showdown with defending 4A state champ South Caldwell on Friday night, May 2, at M.S. Deal Stadium in Granite Falls.

Just three days after dropping a heartbreak 10-9 decision to the Spartans, Alexander was back on the diamond again against the league champs.

However, this time things were not as close. Behind a one-hit, 14 strikeout performance by senior Jimmy Messer, the Spartans cruised to a 6-0 win over the Cougars to advance to the finals.
Alexander is slated to open the state playoffs on the road this Thursday, May 8. The Cougars will travel to Hopewell High School for a 7 p.m. game.

*BASEBALL GAME MOVED TO THURSDAY

Due to scheduling conflicts, the Alexander Central Baseball playoff game at Hopewell has been moved to Thursday night, May 8, at 7 p.m. at Hopewell.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday but was changed on Tuesday.

Alexander is the fourth seed from the NW4A Conference and enters the playoffs with a 10-12 record. Hopewell is the second seed from the MECA 6 Conference.

ACHS Soccer Team opens playoffs tonight at 7 p.m.

After finishing the NW4A Soccer season with a 6-5-1 league record, the Alexander Central Lady Cougar Soccer Team earned the conference’s fourth seed in the NCHSAA Playoffs.

The Lady Cougars (12-6-2) will open post season action on the road this evening with a match against Hopewell High School, the second seed from the Meca 6 Conference.
