Though Alexander County resident Dwight Shook carried his home county as well as that of Watauga, where opponent Jerry Butler resides, Shook was unable to seize the Republican nomination for the N.C. 45th Senate seat.

Though Senator Hillary Clinton won Alexander County with 3,356 votes (73.0 percent) compared to Sen. Barack Obama’s 1090 votes (23.7 percent), Clinton lost the nomination statewide, according to unofficial results.
